Jim has been a partner at DLA Piper (formerly Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich) for over 30 years, focusing primarily on corporate and securities law matters with extensive experience handling formations of companies and venture capital funding, as well as merger and acquisition transactions. Jim has served on the board of directors of several public and private companies, including Launch Media, Inc., Levi Strauss & Co., Paraform, Inc. and Storm Technology, Inc. He also has served on the board of numerous nonprofit organizations, including American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Avenidas (formerly Senior Coordinating Council of Palo Alto), Menlo Park/Atherton Education Foundation, Peninsula Center for the Blind, San Francisco Jewish Community Federation (having served as President from 2008 to 2011), San Francisco Jewish Community Endowment Fund, San Francisco School Volunteers, Ta ube-Koret Campus for Jewish Life and Foundation of UC Berkeley, and the executive board of the Stanford Law School. He holds a B.A. degree in history from Haverford College and a J.D. degree from Stanford Law School. Jim’s wife, Cathy, is a professor of environmental engineering at University of California, Berkeley and is currently vice provost of Academic Planning, Instruction & Facilities. Jim joined the AJWS board of trustees in June 2012.
